Turkey Overcomes 41 Miscues in Five-Set Win Over Italy in Pool D

Japan def. Argentina 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-22)

Turkey def. Italy 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12)

 

Argentina was no match for a balanced Japanese side, while Turkey edged Italy in a five-set affair to kick off Pool D play at the U20 Championships on Friday.

 

Japan 3, Argentina 0

Four players turned in seven or more points and three more chipped in four or more as Japan dominated Argentina in a sweep.

Miyuki Horie managed a team-best 10 points, with seven kills, two aces and a block. Reina Tokoku added eight points, all on kills, while Shiori Aratani and Miyu Nakagawa managed seven points each.

Anahi Florencia Tosi paced Argentina with eight points, including seven kills. Daniela Veronica Nielson Ramella and Agostina Denisse Soria chipped in six points apiece.

Twenty four errors helped Japan’s cause, but the team did enough damage with its 37 kills and nine aces to win the match. Argentina managed just 21 kills and six aces in the loss. Both teams put up five blocks.

 

Turkey 3, Italy 2

Turkey served up 14 aces and downed 56 kills, but won a close five-set match over Italy by just six points (105-99) on Friday.

The nine-point edge in aces (14-5) and 12-point advantage in kills (56-44) helped Turkey overcome 41 miscues in the match.

Tugba Senoglu led all scorers with 20 points for Turkey, serving up a match-high seven aces to go with her team-best 13 kills. Zehra Gunes (13), Saliha Sahin (12) and Cagla Erdem (11) also posted double-digit scoring totals. Gunes put up a team-best five blocks, while Sahin chipped in nine kills and three aces. Erdem managed seven kills, two blocks and two aces.

Nkemdilim Ruth Terry Enweonwu recorded 16 points, including 15 kills, to pace Italy. Elena Pietrini (14) and Giulia Melli (11) followed. Pietrini put down 14 kills, while Melli added 10. Giulia Maria Mancini put up a team-best five blocks and three aces.
