The left-back is definitely out for the rest of the year due to his latest issue, having endured a hellish run of injuries during his time at the club
Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy will miss up to three months of action after a knee operation, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.
Mendy underwent surgery at Dr Ramon Cugat’s Barcelona surgery during the international break, and returned to Manchester to continue his recuperation on Thursday.
The France international felt a problem with the meniscus cartilage in his left leg during City’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United and was advised to go under the knife.
City confirmed the procedure over a week ago but no official timeline was put on the 24-year-old’s recovery.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, however, Guardiola revealed that Mendy will not be back in action until the start of next year.
When asked for a timeframe, the Catalan replied simply: “10 to 12 weeks.”
Mendy has sustained a number of injuries since joining City from Monaco in 2017.
The Frenchman has made just 19 appearances for the club, having cost City around £57 million (€64m).
This season, he has featured 11 times for City, creating five goals, while he missed the majority of the 2017-18 campaign with a cruciate ligament rupture.
He played seven times in the Premier League, but completed 90 minutes on just three occasions- making his comeback in a 5-0 win over Swansea City in April, before also featuring against Huddersfield Town and Brighton, playing a total of 47 minutes.
Guardiola also confirmed that Bernardo Silva will miss Saturday’s game against West Ham, and is doubtful for the Champions League trip to Lyon on Tuesday.
Silva returned from international duty after sustaining an injury, with Portugal releasing a statement regarding his fitness.
The statement read: “Following medical and diagnostic tests performed by the FPF Health and Performance Unit, player Bernardo Silva was considered unavailable for the meeting against Poland, to be held this Tuesday in Guimaraes.”
