Mobs attacking unidentified men on the basis of messages that went viral on various social media platforms have compelled the government to issue guidelines for social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp.
Many lynching incidents that were related to faith of an individual, were incited by perpetrators who had spread fake or bogus information among fringe groups. Following this, messenger application Whatsapp even limited its feature of ‘forwarding’ messages to only five people.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also visited India last month and met government officials to discuss content regulation and other mechanisms surrounding censorship. The government has once again asked social media giants to exercise self-censorship of objectionable content using Artificial Intelligence techniques that will detect and censor obscene graphics and videos.
