An efficient offensive attack gave China a sweep of Peru to kick off the U20 Championships, while the Dominican Republic benefitted from Poland’s miscues in a five-set win to wrap Pool B’s first day of action.
China 3, Peru 0
China tallied seven more kills (46-39) and benefited from six more Peruvian miscues (22-16) in a close three-set win to open the U20 Championships. The teams tied in aces (2 apiece) and Peru managed one more block (7-6) in the loss.
Han Wu racked up 21 points in the victory for China, including 18 kills and both of the team’s aces, while Xiaoqing Cai chipped in 10 points, all on kills.
Leslie Leyva led a group of four Peruvian players with eight or more points. Leyva tallied 11 points, all on kills, while Katherine Regalado (10), Kiara Montes (9) and Maricarmen Guerrero (8) followed. Regalado put up a team-leading four blocks, while Montes added eight kills and Guerrero chipped in seven.
Dominican Republic 3, Poland 2
Poland crushed 72 kills, but could not get out of its own way, committing 42 errors and falling prey to 12 blocks in a five-set loss to the Dominican Republic.
Natalia Murek and Aleksandra Lipska each chipped in 20 point efforts, with 25 and 21 respectively, but it was not enough to lift their team to victory. Murek downed 24 kills, while Lipska added 21 in just four sets, but their nearest teammate, Aleksandra Gryka, scored just seven points.
A more balanced attack brought the Dominican Republic success. Vilka Michelle Peralta Luna (16), Yanlis Liliannis Feliz Sena (15) and Madelin Jazmin Guillen Paredes (14) led the way with double-digit tallies. Luna scored with 14 kills and two blocks, while Sena added 11 kills, three blocks and an ace. Gerladine Stefany Gonzalez registered eight points, including a team-leading five blocks.
